Elias

Six years ago

Icould feel the chilly night air clinging to my skin like a frosty blanket as I huddled in the darkened alley behind The Bar—pulling my hood tightly around my anxious face. I could hear muffled music and raucous laughter seeping through the walls, creating a stark contrast to the ominous atmosphere around me. As I waited patiently, the red sedan idled nearby, serving as a silent accomplice in my clandestine dealings with Jimmy.

Jimmy, the bar owner, emerged from the swinging back door of the bar. His slicked-back hair, and unkempt beard gave him a mysterious aura. I nodded briefly, acknowledging our agreement, and retrieved the bag of illegal firearms as he instructed.

“Any hiccups?” Jimmy asked. He took the duffel from my hands and effortlessly hoisted it onto his shoulders, despite being middle-aged.

“None, sir,” I replied, my voice firm.

“There is one more job I need you to do tonight.”

“What do you need, sir?”

Jimmy leaned in closer, his breath a putrid combination of greed and desperation. “I’ve got something that needs to disappear. You’re going to make it happen for me.”

An hour later, I stood alone in the heart of the dense woods, the scent of pine cocooned my body. Jimmy’s orders were delivered with cold precision—erase all traces of evidence. I saturated the entire inside of the car with an excessive amount of gasoline.

With a trembling hand, I lit a match and felt the heat radiating from it as I threw it into the driver’s seat. Flames erupted from the vehicle. The night air smelled like burning metal and the flickering fire held me spellbound, as I allowed my thoughts to drift away.

My subservience to Jimmy was not born out of debt or obligation; I made certain that I did not owe the man a single dime. No, my obedience was driven by the thrill, the intoxicating rush I experienced with each new job. Although, I could not help but wonder if Jimmy had gone too far this time.

I’m being tested for my loyalty, though.

It would be less of a hassle to seek help from one of the other guys who worked for Jimmy, as they were well acquainted with his more questionable ventures.

I could rationalize away or turn a blind eye to everything I had done up until now. But this . . . this was on a different level.

The smoldering wreckage revealed the gravity of my unintended actions.

As my thoughts spiraled into a dark abyss of ramification, the distant wail of sirens echoed in the distance, snapping me back to reality. Filled with trepidation, I hastily retreated from the burning car, my senses heightened and desperate for safety. The only reaction I had at that moment was to evade the police.

As I ran through the woods, my heart pounded in my chest, my breath came in short, desperate gasps, and the weight of my choices pressed down on me like a tightening vise. I vanished from sight into the shadows of the night, leaving behind the charred remnants of my involvement.
